About Hearth & Syckle
Baker, Crafter, Herbalist

Welcome!
I’m Elizabeth and I invite you to join me as I bake, make, and garden my way through the year.

I created this website to share my Hearthkeeper path. Caring for your home and family is a sacred calling. Hearth & Syckle’s mission is to empower Hearthkeepers with knowledge, resources, and a community to create a home that is not only a refuge from the outside world but is also environmentally friendly and sustainable by remembering the best ways of the past and creating new ones if needed. I fully believe in taking back this role that has been maligned and dismissed over the past few decades.

If someone were to ask, who are you anyway? I can tell you that I am an Airforce Brat. I have lived in West Germany, Saskatchewan and Ontario but have spent most of my life in Alberta. I have been a Legal Assistant and am a former Wilton Cake Decorating Instructor.

I have a great love of history and books. I lean toward a Victorian / Edwardian aesthetic when I can. I love the grace and beauty of that time. I realize it was not all pink roses and unicorns, but I still love the look and feel. I love fine China, crystal, and sliver. I love crisp cloth tablecloths and napkins, embellished with delicate embroidery. I enjoy crafting, crocheting, needlework and sewing. I love that there are things passed down through the generations that will last seemingly forever. This is part of sustainable living for me.

I am a gardener and trained herbalist. Working with the soil and green growing things rejuvenates my soul and brings me peace. While I do not have a large homestead, I still grow some of my own food in my corner of suburbia. I can make my own medicine. I can grow beautiful peonies and roses. These things have required learning from others, be it a book, brother, or Master Gardener. Knowledge can be shared, or a course taken. I have done both and I am now ready to do pay it forward.

I am a Hearthkeeper – a Wife, Mother, Housekeeper, Cook, Baker, Event Planner, Teacher, Caregiver, Healer, Spiritual Guide, Family Historian, Secretary, Treasurer, and many more things I can’t think of now. This is what being a Hearthkeeper is to me. I tend the heart of the home, keeping the home fires burning and ensuring the health and happiness of my family. I keep the wheel of the year turning, celebrating each milestone with food, plants, and crafts.
